In May 2024, I graduated with an Honors Bachelor of Science in Biology. During my tenure, I conducted research, wrote an Honors Thesis, and served as a Teaching Assistant. After graduating, I continued my research and later started an ORISE Fellowship with the USDA-ARS.
Date(s): February 2022 - September 2024
Location: The University of Utah
Role: Research Assistant
Objective / Purpose
I performed experiments towards several different projects in the HYOO Lab towards plant metabolism and immunity. Later focusing on a specific projects for my honors thesis on VOCs their effect on plant immunity during a pathogen attack.
Methods / Protocol
Prepared samples for SA/RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, RT-qPCR and HPLC Analysis; Prepared soil and plants for experimentation; Seed sterilization and plating; Plant fumigation and tissue collection; Bacterial plating and dilutions; Stock, media, and antibiotic preparation.
Reflections
I learned the process of managing a research project over a long period of time. Collecting data, analyzing, and discussing these results with peers and my Principle Investigator. Through leading a project, I was able to learn the patience required when conducting research, and the process of problem-solving in critical moments where samples are at risk.
Date(s): August 2021 - May 2024
Location: The University of Utah
Role:Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
Objective / Purpose
I directed a group of 25+ students in performing a semester-long research project towards the *Tiny Earth* organization. Where we worked with soil samples to test for antimicrobial qualities and potentially find strong, novel antibiotics that can be further tested by the organization.
Methods / Protocol
Prepared soil samples through serial dilutions and plating; Created 'master plates' with a select few of the bacterial colonies from the dilution plates; Performed a series of tests to determine antimicrobial qualities against ESKAPE relatives; Selecting those with good zones of inhibtion, they were subjected to further testing; Gram staining to identify and classify the species; PCR and Gel Electrophoresis to amplify the 16S rRNA gene and confirm it worked; Sending samples to get full genetic sequence to further differientiate due to its highly consierved and variable regions.
Reflections
Through the semesters I spent serving as a teaching assistant, I learned how to be a better communicator. Successfully managing a large group of students each week, and being able to solve spur-of-the-moment issues as they arose ranging from technical issues to group issues. This leadership role was fundamental in my personal growth as a collaborator, decision-maker, and project manager. It was my job to ensure that each group was on-track with the research they were doing, that they were working together, and that they understood the the biology behind the procedures.
Date(s): October 2024 - July 2025
Location: Orlando, Florida
Role:Plant Biotechnology Research Fellow
Objective / Purpose
I performed plant tissue culture experiments towards USDA-ARS projects towards their overall mission. The purpose was to share real research with guests on the *Living with the Land* ride as they passed the large window into the lab, as well as for guests during the *Behind the Seeds Tour*.
Reflections
Throughout this fellowship I honed in on my communication and networking skills. Traveling to conferences to meet new people in plant biology as well as in another field. I managed my projects week to week, ensuring good data collection, analysis and discussion with my coworker and our collaborators. Engaging in such impactful research sparked a deep sense of purpose in me, and I remain grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.

Reflections
Volunteering at St. Mark's Hospital ER and NICU allowed me to witness the incredible strength and resilience of both patients and the dedicated healthcare workers who support them. Working at the Community Food Pantry opened my eyes to the struggles families face regarding food security and the importance of providing hope and assistance. Volunteering at events like FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention and the Festival of Trees filled me with a sense of joy and community, seeing the beautiful trees, wreaths, and items made by people all over the state. Additionally, the Burrito Project in SLC highlighted the need for empathy and direct action in fighting hunger. Each of these experiences deepened my understanding of our shared humanity and reinforced my desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
